Objectives

• To promote and maintain a high standard of practice, training and education in the physiotherapy profession;

• To promote and protect the professional status and safeguard the professional interests and rights of the Association members;

• To compile and maintain a list of persons whom the Association has accepted as being qualified for membership of the Association;

• To promote interest in and gain full recognition of physiotherapy by members of the medical allied professions;

• To promote physiotherapy through conferences, meetings and lectures, and by other such means as the Association may from time to time determine;

• To institute or maintain a journal or other such publications as may be necessary in the interest of the Association;

• To promote legislation to protect the public and the rights of the Association members; and Generally do all such acts as may be deemed conductive or incidental to the interests of the Association.

History

In 1963, 10 non-government physiotherapists meet in February to discuss the formation of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association.  The Constitution of the Association was approved in May 1963, and the Association was officially registered in November 1963.  Later, occupational therapists were invited to join in the activities of the Association as Associate members.   

In 1966, the name of the Association was changed to Hong Kong Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists Association. 　

The joint association was dissolved in 1973, and a new Constitution for the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association was established to facilitate an application for membership of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy.  　

The Association gained a provisional membership in 1976, and was accepted as a full member-association in 1978. 　

In 1994, the Association joined the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong as Associate member.
