The Community Rehabilitation and Primary Healthcare Specialty Group (CRnPHSG) is affiliated with the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association. It is dedicated to transforming contemporary preventive healthcare, rehabilitation, and pedagogical-therapeutic models, approaches, concepts, and research evidence into community-level practices. The Specialty Group aims to address the risk factors of frailty syndrome and to screen, early intervene, and manage age-related health and functional decline as well as childhood-onset disorders, while also focusing on rehabilitation and tertiary prevention for non-communicable diseases and disorders.
As the local population ages and the number of individuals living with chronic diseases and/or childhood-onset disorders in the community increases, the government has elevated the importance of community (re)habilitation and primary healthcare to a policy level, with several new initiatives recently implemented and more set to follow. Now is an appropriate time to strengthen connections among community physiotherapists, including those working in various sectors such as non-government organisations (NGOs), private practices, the Hospital Authority, and government departments.
The work objectives of the CRnPHSG are threefolds:
- Advocate for collaboration and service alignment across sectors and NGOs.
- Raise public and academic awareness of the accessibility and importance of community physiotherapy services.
- Promote the specialisation of community rehabilitation and preventive physiotherapy to enhance the professional development of community physiotherapists.
The ultimate goal is to elevate the professional standards and image of physiotherapists working in community-related fields to attract and retain talent.
The expected outcomes of the CRnPHSG are:
- Collaborate with local NGOs and academic and professional training institutions to provide relevant Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes for physiotherapists working in the community.
- Promote local academic institutions to enhance entry-level and post-graduate training in community rehabilitation, pedagogical-therapeutic services, and primary healthcare, as well as to support related research efforts.
- Advocate for public-private partnerships, medical-social collaboration, and mutual referrals among NGOs to promote a continuous care model.
